ZEN GUERILLA (#80, 02-2000)

Posted in interview by andreas

When I started listening to Blues records for the first time sometimes in the middle of the eighties, there weren´t very interesting releases. I remember, that I liked Eric Clapton or Robert Cray. Over the years I found more intensive blues-songs by muscians like Blind Lemon Jefferson who made music sixty years ago and who I knew only from old records from 1978.

For years I listened to such music. That changed with Punk and Hardcore. Maybe that was the reason that I was totally excited about the „Trancer States in Tongues“ of Zen Guerilla, a band that I did not consider before. The band mixes Blues with Noise and is a brilliant symbiosis of both styles.

This interview was actually planed for our drugs-special issue. Unfortunately, Marcus Durant, singer of Zen Guerilla, did not like to talk about those things in public. „That is private“, he said at the beginning of our talk – no protest possible. Too bad because the noisy blues of the band implies that Marcus sure had to say something interesting to that topic…

Anyway, my question is: when I think of Blues, I mainly think of alcohol and no other drugs. Makes that sense for you?

Marcus: In my opinon Blues goes deeper than alcohol.  Actually, alcohol punishes the blues. Blues comes from the core of you existence and not from some external mights. Blues is deeply related to your past. Blues is a way to express your feelings. I understand the Blues without drinking alcohol.

How did you begin to play Blues?

Marcus: At home we always listened to a lot of Soul, Gospel and Blues. I came from a mixed family, my father is black and my mother is white. My dad hat s ahuge influence on the music that I listen to. Thorgh him I got to know for example Ray Charles or Otis Redding. I spent a lot of time listening to Blues-Records. I wanted to give that style something back because the Blues helped me through many hard times.

Was heisst das?

What does that mean?

Marcus: Like I said, I come from a mixed family. I grew up in the seventies, it was not easy back then. This music helped me to understand where I come from and where my place in this world is.

It is kind of a surprise that you make such music and Zen Guerilla were always on record labels who were not so known for that style of music: Alternative Tentacles back then and today Sub Pop in the USA and Epitaph here in Europe.

Marcus: In the beginning we released our records on our own label, that was fun, but also quite a challenge. Then I got to know Jello Biafra and through him Alternative Tentacles. It was the same with Sub Pop later: they were interested in our band. The style was not so improtant. Both labels released rocknroll records. And our music is also Rock, just like soul or blues. Epitaph are very excited to work with us. And that is the only thing that matters. Yes, we are different than Offspring or Bad Religion, but thats great. That gives the label another huge field. Another thing is: Bad Religion are also Rock´n´Roll and Rock´n´Roll is – like I said – influenced by the blues.

Do you think that young listeners, who own lots of Epitaph-Bands, are aware of these traditions?

Marcus: I don´t know if everybody can understand the Blues. But I am sure that there are some people who are interested in blues and who want to find out what kind of music blues is. Just like I did in my childhood. If someone is curious, then they are gonna go for it.

When I started listening to blues for the first time 15 years ago, there were almost nobody in my circle of friends who was interested in Blues. An older friend taped blues-records for me. I don´t know if the situation changed today that much.

Marcus: You have people who already know everything and then you have people who start to explore new things. Maybe someone finds out what music Blues is and then he influences his friends just like in your situation. It depends how independent you are.

Was für Leute kommen denn überhaupt zu euren Shows?

What kind of people came to your shows?

Marcus: We have both kinds of people: there are people who are interested in these kind of music since years and also young kids who just started to explore the music.

How do real puritans react to your music because you are extermly noisy…

Marcus: Richtig.

Marcus: Correct. Like I said, I want to give something back to the Blues. None of the things we do corresponds to the real original style. We give our music an own personality. It is a challenge when you experiment woth the music and try to do something on your own. I respect our audience but I do not care so much what people expect.

I ask because the first Blues-record that I bought was by Robert Cray. That music is totally different than your music.

Marcus: It could be that there exist a few purists who don´t want to understand our music. But then again there are also people who very much like our music.

I would like to talk about the layout of the new record. It looks very much like a Sub-Pop-release of the late eighties or early nineties. And it was even produced by Jack Endino…

Marcus: I did the layout, these are all my own ideas alone. Jack Endino is a great human and producer, that it is why I wanted to work with him. I totally respect old Sub-Pop-bands like Mudhoney or Soundgarden.

I thought the label did not exist anymore. Lots of the last records they did and which I heard did really suck.

Marcus: I think a circle ends at Sub Pop. These days they are realesing more Rock´n´Roll again. And thats why they were so interested in us. And we were also interested in them because they are just as enthusiastic as Alternative Tentacles, but Sub Pop really offers more options.
