ZANN (#113, 08-2005)

Who or what is ZANN (please introduce yourself and tell us about the name)?

Uwe: ZANN is Ron (6 stringes), Mark (sticks), John (six strings), Robert (vocals), Uwe (4 strings); Zann is also the main protagonist of a short story by H.P. Lovecraft; this short story explains very accurate the reason why we are making music.

So what is the story, why are you making music.

Uwe: Ne lass‘ mal.

Uwe: That story is short, everyone can read I. All other questions are then answered.

Kennt ihr die band Mekong Delta?

Do you know the band Mekong Delta?

xRonx: Ja, habe ich in Ostzeiten mal beim Jugend(Radio)Sender DT64 aufgenommen.

xRonx: Yes, i taped them from the Youth-Radio-station DT64 in my former DDR-years.

Uwe: Nein.

Uwe: No.

Robert: Nein … Bin wohl zu jung – oder was?!

Robert: No, am I too young or what?!

John: Yes, the bandname appears when you search „ZANN“ on ebay 🙂

The music of Erich Zann“ hatten. Wie alt seid Ihr denn?

I am just saying, because they had an album called „The music of Erich Zann. How old are you then?

Uwe: Siehst Du mal; muss ja ‚was ‚dran sein an der Geschichte. Also lesen. Gehe straff‘ auf die 30 zu, verfallstechnisch gesehen.

Uwe: There you go, there must be something concerning the short sory, so please read it. I am currently 30 years, the doom starts…

John: I am 29 years old and the oldest in the band. 🙁

Robert: I am with 26 the youngest person, then again I have the mother-position in the band. Sometimes it nerves you that your children don´t behave like they should 🙂

Seit wann gibt`s euch?

Since when does ZANN exist?

Uwe: Since autumn 19991 as four-piece-group, in spring 2000 John joined us on guitar, happy ever after.

You have here in the area (especially Mittel-Unterfrank) a close to fanatic following, I only know that from the band Mörser, how did that happened?

xRonx: ???

xRonx: Is that so??? Maybe it has to do with the quality of the music??? Mabye that and the fact that we sound live real loud and mabye some people like us for the fact that we are not an Orchid-copy or that we don´t sound like 90ties scream-emo…

Uwe: Haben wir? Die Kids aus Würzburg, Schweinfurt vielleicht? Nette Leute. Fanatisch? Keine Ahnung.

Uwe: Do we have such a following? The Kids in Würzburg, Schweinfurt maybe? Nice people there. Fanatic? No idea.

Robert: I guess in Schweinfurt (Trainspotting Fest) there were all friends there plus this drunken Punk frim France, hahaha – Who knows – I liked it there and had my fun. When people are moving during our gig, we have get a better feeling – it feels good to get connected to  the audience, thats why we don´t like it so much to play on stages!

You did recently a tour in the USA – was that the first time?

Uwe: That was our second US-tour. Last summer it was the eastcoast, this autumn we toured the westcoast.

Danke.

Robert: Yep – our first tour was with our friends Blamegame from Atlanta/GA, our second trip was with Takaru from San Francisco / CA (sadly they broke up). I hope, it was not our last time in the states and maybe we can do a full US-tour. Next summer we want to play in Japan with BIRUSHANAH from Osaka. I think that is best thing when you play in a fucking Punk-Hardcore-bands: touring and enjoying cities and places which we otherwise would never saw without the band. Sometimes it is hard to believe where we already played and that really people exist who do shows for. I really know appreciate that, thanks!

Habt ihr schöne Geschichten mitgebracht?

Any nice tourstories?

xRonx
: I only want to say Skinhead and axe in Verdun, very funny.

Robert
: That was not during our US-tour, that was in France in spring-time. But Ron has (he admitted this himself) only limited memory capacity and can´t remember anything.

Egal, hört sich trotzdem interessant an…

It doesn´t matter, the story sounds interesting…

Robert: It was rather not interesting: this fuckhead did attack us with his axe after Ron and John provoked him, so maybe it was really our fault, haha. But Uwe did almost lost his arm (no shit).  Our co-driver-slice was broken and then we got a chase through the city with final destination police station. Another prove that we fron ZANN are cowardly persons cause we were five people versus only one. Sadly our friends from Battle Royale were already on the road. That was all in all a nice ending of a shit tour.

Let´s continue with the US-tour.

Uwe: The most miserable story of the tour: our shit gig in Tucson, AZ – and in the audience was the singer of Groundwork which I later got to know. I really was ashamed of our show.  Highlight of the tour: the drive to the desert at the next day and stopping in the middle of nowhere and seeing fucked-up settlements – really cliche, wonderful. What I liked even better: to get to know the guys from TAKARU better and visiting old friends in San Francisco. Without them nothing would have been possible – thanks!

Robert: My highlight was the vegan bacon and all these new softdrinks -that was fun, but these are not so exciting stories which are really worth to tell you all. The tour was well organized and big fun. I think it was the most relaxing tour which we ever played. Sadly, it was too short, but I hope that it was not the last time.

Why are  german bands so hyped in the states these days, I think of Mörser, Highscore, Rammstein…? In the past there was not such a hype…

xRonx: Der teutonische Scharm? Hehe!

xRonx: The teutonic charme? Haha! And why are US-bands so hyped here in Germany?

Uwe: I know this supposed myth concerning german bands, but I really can´t say that this is the truth. Rammstein – allright, mainstream and big promotion behind them, but Mörser and Highscore? One person knew of Mörser… ACME is popular, but that´s all.

Robert: I think it is the same with the hype concerning US-Bands who are treated here as „gods“ (thats why they tour three times a year here, hahaha)… maybe it is the thing that you always want to have something you don´t have. I realized again that american people are way too superficial and that they mix up contries and people. Well…

For them everything here is so far way (ok, that goes for us too) – and they really don´t know the cities here (even if they always asking from where you come from, „Oh, Germany, my aunt lives in London“  they almost can´t geografically sort out the cities, but we can with lots of the cities in the states. I think this superficiality and the often played friendliness were two things which bummed me out twice. Political topics were also treated with almost no deepness. Therefore it is totally okay that for example Council Records have much links to Nazi-bands.

If you say something concerning that matter, then most folks didn´t care and everybody has attended a Death in Juni-gig even if strange people appeared there. That was a bummer for me. Also, I really donßt know if german bands are so hyped. The most bands I know from here and whi have been in the States did have bad tours. It got better in the last years, but ask the folks from Chispa/Enfold or Monocrome for their views! The local band was always the last bands so that the audience stayed. So, where is the hype then?

Was macht ihr sonst so?

Ok, Rammstein was more a joke in this numeration, but I really thought, that the mentioned bands are known in the USA. Ok, what are you doing besides the band?

Ingenieur.

xRonx: I just finished my studies, degreed engineer.

Uwe: Was meinst du? Neben der „Frei“Zeit? Ich studiere noch.

Uwe: What do you mean? Besides the „free“ time? I am a student.

Robert: Mmh …

Robert: Mmh… I try to get things done. Once in a while I go to the university, I work in a local skateshop and I expand with my mailorder/label „Adagio830“ and try to stay a small alternative against the big ones and try to stay DIY – that is important for me, even after all this years. Sure, there are things which changed in all these years and I have not the same amount of time anymore, but I want stay true to myself. That means that I stand almost 99 percent behind my records, both musically and lyrics-wise…

Hahaha

I don´t get bored in my life – everythings goes his ways and I hope I can live the way  live for a long time even when I sometimes get my depressions and want to end all things. For example when I have to pay all the bills and nothing moves forward. But I also can´t imagine to work fulltime from nine to five every day. I give my best. Also, a PS2 can really make a long winter sweet. Hahaha.

John: Well, I finished my diploma in geophysical science a few years ago, since then I am enrolled as a student; I have some side jobs to pay my bills, also I do together my brother buttons (see flossbros.com), I guess a little advertisement is okay… 🙂

Someone of you is organizing shows, right?

Robert: Yes, once in a while I organize shows. At the moment I have a low profile. Too often I realized that I am not into it with all my heart. I felt burnt out and fed up. It is hard for me to end it, but at the moment there are not a lot things which really moved me.

So, I do shows for friends and for bands that I like a lot. Maybe I will do more, but at the moment I don´t have much time and also not so much enthusiasm as it used to be.

Was it problematic for you that MRR called you a west-german band?

xRonx: No, I didn´t care, nobody is interested if you are from the east or the west…

Uwe: It didn´t matter, such categories do not make a band better or worse. Probably just a communication error.

Robert: The superficiality of the Americans, hahaha. I At the end I could not care less. The origin of the band shouln´t be important because it does not make the music worse or better. Ok, if you are from Italy, that would be different… hahahaha.

John: Ist mir egal!

John: I didn´t care! But it does matter if you are from Germany or from the USA, cause otherwise there are no explanations for the hype of some third-rate US-Bands here.

Wie kam es eigentlich zu dem Interview?

How did the interview happen?

John: Keine Ahnung!?!

John: No idea!?

Robert: Josh of Takaru works now and then for MAXIUMUM ROCKNROLL and he thought that we have something to say, so he asked us if we are willing to do an interview, which finally was a talk between him and me.

At the end: the garden-party-question: please imagine that you are celebrating a garden-party, you can invite three bands/musicians you like. The clou is: also dead musicians or broken-up bands are possible. How is rocking the garden of ZANN?

Ich hätte wohl gern SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE gesehen. Sind aber leider nie nach Europa gekommen! …dann WAXWING und noch ELLIOTT SMITH oder TOM LOMACCHIO!

John: Mmmhhh… I never thought about this! I would say it should be bands, which I couldn´t see live yet or which I won´t be able to see live anymore. I would have loved to see SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE live, but they never made it to Europe… maybe Waxwing and then Elliot Smith or Tom Lomacchio!

xRonx: That is easy: Joy Division, Born Against and finall, when its getting dark Vic Bondi solo with his guitar

Geil!

Great!

Robert: Es gibt so einige.

Robert: There existquite a few. I would choose Bruce Springsteen in his „Greetings from Ashbury Park“phase, and Johnny Cash would also be great. Moss Icon and Born Against would also be funny. And then Rites of Spring, Gray Matter and Slant6… Gehenna must perform at the and when people don´t want to leave… hahahaha.
