XBXRX (#129, 04-2008)

Eigentlich wollte ich sie ja endlich mal sehen, diese Band, die – dazu später mehr – für eine explosive Bühnen-Show bekannt ist, mit der sie ihren wüsten No-Wave-Spazz-Rock kredenzen. Das neue Album „Wars“ muss als weiterer gelungener Schritt im Rahmen dieses musikalischen Projekts gewertet werden, reifer vielleicht, aber nicht milder, konzentrierter, aber nicht gelassener.

Actually, I wanted to at last see this band , the – more on that later – is known for an explosive stage show plus their No Wave Spazz rock . The new album “ Wars “ has to be considered as a further successful step in this musical project , mature perhaps, but not mild, concentrated , but not relaxed .

Sie waren in Berlin, ich nicht – schwierig, sich zu treffen. Aber es gibt ja Telefone, weshalb ich eines kühlen Wintertages in Berkeley anrief und mit dem Mann sprach, der sich Vice Cooler nennt.

They were in Berlin , I do not – difficult to meet. But there are phones, which is why I called a cool winter day in Berkeley  and spoke to the man who is called Vice Cooler .

Ich wollte euch eigentlich in Berlin sehen, das hat aber nicht funktioniert. Wie war denn die Tour?

I wanted to see you in Berlin actually, but that has not worked. How was the tour ?

Vice: Wir waren sechs Jahre nicht in Mitteleuropa. Es fühlte sich an, als sei es erst zwei Jahre her. Es war lustig. Die Leute haben sehr positiv reagiert.

Vice: We were six years  not in Central Europe. It felt as if it was only two years ago. It was funny. People have reacted very positively.

Warum habt ihr so lange gebraucht, wieder nach Europa zu kommen?

Why did it take so long to get back to Europe ?

Vice: Wir sind alle extrem beschäftigt die ganze Zeit. Wir haben andere Bands. Weasel, unser Schlagzeuger, produziert ziemlich viel und spielt viele Shows. Steve geht zur Schule, ich habe eine Band …

Vice: We are all extremely busy all the time. We have other bands. Weasel, our drummer, produced quite a bit and played a lot of shows. Steve goes to school , I have a band …

Vice: Genau, und Steve und ich sind ausserdem in der Band KIT und haben in letzter Zeit viel gemacht. Und XBXRX sind ziemlich viel auf Tour, in Mexiko und den USA, was einfacher zu machen ist. Dann konnten wir in England touren, wo wir nie waren, deswegen haben wir das gemacht und so weiter.

Vice: Exactly, and Steve and I are also in the band KIT and have done a lot lately. And XBXRX are pretty much on tour in Mexico and the US which is easier to do. Then we were able to tour in England, where we have never been, so we did that and so on.

Gab es ernsthafte Verletzungen auf dieser Tour?

Were there serious injuries on this tour?

Vice: Ja, ich bekam fünfmal einen Schlag (blows) an den Kopf, was mich gegen Ende der Tour etwas benommen gemacht hat. Das waren alles Unfälle, aber es tat weh. Der letzte hat mich wirklich aufgeregt. Weisst du, wir verletzten uns nicht mehr so oft. Wir versuchen wirklich, das zu vermeiden. Es macht keinen Spass und das Touren schwierig.

Vice: Yes, I got 5 blows to the head what has made me by the end of the tour a little bit dazed. This were all accidents, but it hurt. The last has really made me nervousme. If you know, we did not injure ourselves any more so often. We really try to avoid this. It gives no pleasure and makes the tours difficult.

Ich las von einer XBXRX-Show, wo ihr alle nach drei Minuten ausser Gefecht gesetzt wart…

I read from a XBXRX show where you were put out of action all after three minutes…

Vice: Ja, das ist wahr. Wenn das das erste Mal passiert, ist es in der Rückschau lustig, aber nach dem dritten oder vierten Mal denkst du: Das ist Scheisse. Es ist nicht wirklich lustig, Schmerzen zu haben., Wir sind auch keine gewalttätigen Leute. Wir sind eher passive Typen.

Vice: Yes, this is true. If this passes the first time, it is amusing in the retrospect, but after the third or fourth spot you think: This is shit. It is not really amusing to have pains. We are also no violent people. We are rather passive types.

Ihr seid im allgemeinen ernster geworden?

You have become more serious generally?

Vice: Nicht im allgemeinen. Es ist einfach… Arm zu sein und nicht versichert ist Scheisse. Verletzt zu werden kostet viel Geld. Und wir haben lieber Spass.

Vice: Not generally. It is easy. . . to be broke and not insured is shit. To be injured costs a lot of money. And we rather have fun.

Viele US-Amerikaner haben keine Krankenversicherung, nicht wahr?

Many Americans have no health insurance, right?

Vice: Eigentlich niemand.

Vice: Actually, nobody.

Das ist hart. Aber ihr lebt von der Musik?

This is hard. But you can make a living from the music?

Vice: Ja, wir leben alle von der Musik, deswegen sind wir die ganze Zeit so beschäftigt. Wir verdienen nicht viel Geld. Die andere Seite ist, dass es etwas ist, was wir sowieso machen würden, weil wir es wirklich mögen. Es ist wirklich jeden Monat ein Kampf. Ich habe in Berlin mit Leuten über ihre Mieten gesprochen, und es ist so billig. Ich habe ein wirklich kleines Zimmer, und das kostet 550 Dollar im Monat. Und ich kenne Leute, die buchstäblich einen Schrank haben, der 600 Dollar kostet.

Vice: Yes, we can make a living from on the music, so we are occupied all the time . We do not earn a lot of money. The other side is that it is something what we would make anyway because we like it really. It is really every month a fight. I have spoken in Berlin with people of their rents, and it is so cheap. I have a really small room, and this costs 550 dollars in the month. And I know people who have literally a cupboard which costs 600 dollars.

Es ist ziemlich übel in der Bay Area.

It is quite bad in the Bay area.

Vice: In den USA ist es im allgemeinen ziemlich schlimm. New York ist ganz besonders übel. Es ist jeden Monat schwierig, aber es funktioniert immer, weil wir die ganze Zeit arbeiten. Ich schreibe auch und fotografiere. Gerade hat mich ID, ein englisches Magazin, gefragt, ich schreibe hin und wieder für den San Francisco Bay Guardian, ich habe für VICE geschrieben, darüber wie es ist, als Teenager zu touren.

Vice: In the USA it is quite bad generally. New York particularly feels sick. It is difficult every month, but it always functions because we work all the time. I also write and take photos. ID, an English magazine, just asked me to do something for them, I write every now and then for the San Francisco Bay Guardian, I have written for VICE, like it is to travel as a teenager.

Wofür steht der Name XBXRX?

For which does the name XBXRX stand?

Vice: Der steht für gar nichts, das ist einfach Babysprache.

Vice: TIt stands for nothing at all, this is simply baby talk.

Auf „Wars“ gibt es keinen Hinweis darauf, wer was spielt oder wer in der Band ist. Das ergibt eine etwas mysteriöse Aura…

On „Wars“ there is no tip to who plays what or who is in the band. This proves a little bit mysterious aura…

Vice: Wir wollen nicht unbedingt mysteriös wirken. Keine unserer Platten hat Credits. Unser Ansatz ist, dass es um die Band als Ganzes gehen soll, nicht um die Individuen. Was der einzelne spielt, ist relativ unwichtig im Vergleich zu dem, was die Band ist. Wir hatten viele Mitglieder, die in den letzten zehn Jahren kamen und gingen. Und wir hatten nie das Gefühl, dass uns dieser Aspekt jemals negativ beeinträchtigt hat. Wir denken einfach, dass es etwas Grösseres ist.

Vice: We want to look not necessarily mysterious. None of our records has credits. Our thing is: It should be about the band as a whole, not about the individuals. What the single one plays, is relatively insignificant in comparison to what is the band all about. We had many members who came during the last ten years and went. And we never had the feeling that to us this aspect has one day interfered with negatively. We simply think that it is something bigger.

Bist du das einzige konstante Mitglied der Band?

Are you the only steady member of the band?

Vice: Wir sind seit ein paar Jahren ein festes Trio. Steve und ich haben die Band damals gegründet. Weasel ist seit der Hälfte der Zeit dabei.

Vice: We are a firm trio for a few years. At that time Steve and I have founded the band. Weasel is present since half of the time.

Ihr habt in Alabama angefangen und seid dann vor etwas mehr als fünf Jahren nach Oakland gezogen. Wahrscheinlich, weil da mehr los ist.

You have started in Alabama and then have moved a little bit more than five years ago to Oakland. Probably because there is more going on.

Vice: Das ist ein Teil davon. Wir hatten viele Freunde hier. Zuerst kamen wir einfach für den Sommer zu Besuch. Unsere Bekannten haben uns sehr stark ermutigt, hierherzuziehen. Wir konnten bei ihnen wohnen, sie haben Shows für uns gebucht, ich bekam Jobs, ich habe nicht mal etwas suchen müssen, es passierte einfach. Es schien insgesamt sinnvoller, musikalisch, künstlerisch, persönlich. Und in Alabama kannten wir keine Leute mehr, die waren alle weggezogen, das war eine Sackgasse.

Vice: This is a part of it. We had many friends here. First we simply came for the summer for visit. Our friends have encouraged us very strongly to move to here. We could live with them, they have booked shows for us, I got jobs, I had not to search sometimes something, it simply happened. It seemed more sensible all together, musical, artistic, personal. And in Alabama we knew no more people, everyone left the state, this was a dead end.

Wie ist es jetzt in Oakland? Die Stadt wird ja teilweise…

How is it now in Oakland? The town becomes partial…

Vice: Gentrified? Ja. Es ist seltsam: Es wird gentrifiziert, aber die Verbrechensrate steigt. Die Mordrate in Oakland ist gerade wirklich hoch. Es ist verrückt, weil die Stadtplaner ein paar Condos (Apartmenthäuser) bauen liessen, und die Immobilienpreise schossen in die Höhe. Deswegen dachten sie, sie müssten noch mehr bauen. Sie brechen sogar das Gesetz. In Gegenden, wo es nur zweigeschossige Häuser geben darf, bauen sie sechsgeschossig. Und wenn Leute dagegen protestieren, sagt die Stadt: Oh, das könnt ihr nicht machen.

Vice: Gentrified? Yes. It is strange: It becomes Gentrified, but the crime rate rises. The murder rate in Oakland is just really high. It is crazy because the town planners allowed to build a few Condos (dwelling houses), and the real estate prices shot upwards. So they thought, they would have to build even more. They break even the law. In areas where there may be only 2-storey houses they build 6-storey. And if people protest against it, the town says: Oh, this you cannot make.

Dann sagen die Bauherren: Aber sie stehen schon da, und die Stadt sagt, Okay… Es ist total korrupt. Sie haben die Bürgermeister geschmiert. Totaler Wahnsinn. Steve und ich hatten ein altes Haus in Oakland in einer sehr netten Künstlernachbarschaft. Und alle Künstler wurden hinausgeworfen, wir waren die einzigen, die übrig waren. Wir hatten einen Keller, wo wir einen Haufen Platten aufgenommen haben, wir hatten einen Proberaum und wir konnten zu jeder Tageszeit aufnehmen.

Then say the developers: But they already stand there, and the town says, Okay. . . It is absolutely corrupt. They have smeared the mayors. Complete insanity. Steve and I had an old house in Oakland in a very nice artist’s neighborhood. And all artists were thrown out, we were the only ones which were left. We had a cellar where we have recorded a bunch of records, we had a pratice space where we could record every time of the day.

Das war eine Art kreatives Zentrum für viele Leute in Oakland. Bands kamen, um aufzunehmen, es gab viele Partys. Dann wurde das Grundstück aufgekauft und jemand von der Baugesellschaft kam und sagte: Entweder bezahlen wir euch dafür, dass ihr geht, oder ihr werdet vertrieben – was wollt ihr? Wollt ihr uns verarschen? Wir sind seit fünf Jahren hier. Totaler Wahnsinn. Wir haben die Auswirkungen der Gentrifizierung am eigenen Leib erfahren. Das Haus ist vorbei, ein Condo soll dort nächstes Jahr gebaut werden.

This was a sort of creative centre for many people in Oakland. Bands came to record here, there were many parties. Then the property was bought up and somebody came of the building company and said: Either we pay you for the fact that you go, or you are expelled – what do you want? Want you to take the piss out of us? We are for five years here. Complete insanity. We have found out the effects of the gentrification on our own body. The house is over, a Condo should be built there the next year.

Gibt es denn so viele Leute, die in diesen Condos leben wollen?

Are there then so many people who want to live in this Condos?

Vice: Die Nachfrage lässt nach, aber sie bauen immer noch welche, ich weiss nicht warum. Die Dinger sind ausserdem wirklich hässlich. Sie reissen diese ganzen wirklich alten Victorians ab, schmeissen lokale Geschäfte raus, vetreiben die Anwohner. Es ist ein Ergebnis des Neunziger-Jahre-Sitcom-Fernsehens. Seitdem wollen die ganzen reichen Leute, die früher in den Vorstädten gewohnt haben, in der Stadt wohnen, weil sie denken, dass es cool ist, in einem Künstlerviertel zu leben – und dann vertreiben sie die Künstler und die Kunst.

Vice: The inquiry decreases, but they still build which, I do not know why. Moreover, the things are really ugly. They tear off these whole really old Victorians, throw local shops, make the local residents go away. It is a result of the 90ties-Sitcom-TV. Since then the whole rich people who have lived earlier in the suburbs want to live in the town because they think that it is cool to live in one artist’s quarter – and then they expel the artists and the art.

Und was ist deine Perspektive?

And what is your perspective?

Vice: Ich bin gerade nach Berkeley gezogen, was das gleiche ist, nur fünf Blocks weiter, aber es ist eine andere Stadt.

Vice: I have moved just to Berkeley what is the same one, only five blocks further, but it is another town.

Ist das nicht noch teurer?

Is this not even more expensive?

Vice: Ein bisschen. Ich hatte Glück. Ich habe ein cooles Haus, wo schon ein Freund von mir wohnte. Steve hat gerade gar keine Unterkunft, er schläft bei Freunden auf der Couch.

Vice: A little bit. I had luck. I have a cool house where already a friend of me lived. Steve has just no lodging, he sleeps with friends on the couch.

Was machst du in den nächsten Monaten?

What do you make during the next months?

Vice: Jetzt habe ich Freunde hier, die Band High Places aus New York. Sie sind wirklich gut. Ich hänge mit ihnen ab, vielleicht machen wir ein bisschen Musik zusammen. Ich versuche ein Album fertig aufzunehmen, an dem ich seit eineinhalb Jahren arbeite. Und heute Abend spiele ich mit KIT.

Vice: Now I have friends here, the band High Places from New York. They are really good. I hang around with them, maybe we play a little music together. I try to finally record an album on which I work for one and a half years. And tonight I play with KIT.

Mit Kit nehmen wir ein paar Singles auf. Ich habe ein paar Artikel geschrieben. Einen hab ich direkt nach der Tour geschrieben, wir kamen um acht Uhr Abends an, um acht Uhr morgens musste ich den Text abgeben. Wir schalten eigentlich nie runter. Manche Leute sagen: Hey, XBXRX haben seit Monaten nichts gemacht, arbeitet ihr nicht an Sachen? Oh Mann, wir arbeiten an so vielen Sachen. Ich komme eigentlich fast nie dazu, mal abzuhängen.

With Kit we are recording a few singles. I have written some articles. I have written one directly after the tour, we came home at eight o’clock of evening and at eight o’clock in the morning I had to deliver the text. We never slow down, actually. Some people say: Hey, for months XBXRX have made nothing, do you not work on things? Oh man, we work on so many things. I almost never have the time to just hang around.

Diese Sache mit den Singles… Ihr habt mit XBXRX viele Singles aufgenommen, mit KIT nimmst du gerade mehrere auf. Verkauft ihr viele davon?

This thing with the singles. . . You have recorded many singles with XBXRX, with KIT you just record several singles. Do you sell many of it?

Vice: Von manchen haben wir 7000 Exemplare verkauft, von manchen 500. Ich verstehe wirklich nicht, warum sich welche verkaufen und andere nicht, das ergibt nie Sinn. Wir machen sie einfach aus Spass oder wenn wir ein paar Songs herumliegen haben. Vielleicht bringen wir einen Auftritt im Vera in Groningen auf der letzten Tour. Sie haben es aufgenommen und es klingt wirklich fucked up.

Vice: From some we have sold 7000 copies, from some to 500. I really do not understand, why which sell and other not, this never proves sense. We make them simply from fun or if we have a few songs lie around. Maybe we publish an appearance in Vera in Groningen on the last tour. They have recorded it and it really sounds fucked up.

Steve hat es im Auto angemacht und wir haben gefragt: Welche Band ist das? Es klang ganz anders als in unseren Köpfen. Das machen wir vielleicht. Wir machen eine Single mit Japanther, die wir aufnehmen müssen. Und wir machen ein neues Album. Deswegen müssen wir viel dafür schreiben. Wir machen die ganzen neuen Sachen mit Kalimba und Midi-Synthesizer. Ziemlich cool.

Steve has turned on it in the car and we have asked: Which band is this? It sounded quite differently than in our heads. We make this maybe. We make a single with Japanther which we must record. And we make a new album. So we must write a lot for it. We make the whole new things with Kalimba and Midi synthesizer. Quite cool.
