WORLD / INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY(#68, 02-1998)

Posted in interview by andreas

What is to be held of it if 8 people go in suits or clothes on a punk rock concert on the stage, again help themselves of so obscure instruments like tuba, clarinet or saxophone and tell us, besides, that they are a secret society? I also do not know it, to tell the truth.

But the WORLD / INERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY is live (and also just in comparison to the, in my opinion, rather weak records) such sympathetically and amusingly that it is a true joy. Then still considering that all that is carried out on an absolutely uncommercial level what is not necessarily natural (one thinks only of Ska bands who do always ask relatively a lot money for concerts. . . )… is the WORLD / INERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY already a little bit quite brilliant or at least a little bit quite special…

The interview was conducted on the 19. december 1997 in the morning during breakfast, after the band has guested the day before in the Göttingen JuZI. If someone wants to find more about WORLD / INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY and has an Internet connection, their homepage is found under http://www . outersound. com, however, I must say that I do not find the homepage very exciting.

As an entrance one text of their second 7″. . .

So, I think, right now we make the interview.

Terry: OK, was willst du wissen?

Terry: OK, what do you want to know?

I want to know everything about the „secret society“. I assume that in Germany hardly somebody knows anything about it.

Terry: This is no miracle, it is a secret.

If you can tell me more about it, even if it is confidential?

(Schweigen)

Terry:  Yes, I can already tell you what, but it will be only very incomplete. Well, my name is Mr. Terry Claude and I play the clarinet, here beside me sits my friend Mrs. Chrystal chaos and she plays tuba in our secret society. (silence)

Hey, this is really damned incomplete.. Can you tell me what a „secret society“ generally is? What do you make, except you are confidential?

Terry: So, it is a subversive group of individuals who usee her forces together. . . to. . . , actually it is a matter… to stirr something up at home in Brooklyn, to wake the kids up because the kids have simply become too lazy. It has started, actually, with the fact that we have simply made pranks, steal things, turn around road signs  and such things; one day my friend Powder, the keyboard player, then the wonderful idea to write a song. This was about two years ago. Since then we have written musical grandeurs and have made the people listening to them. And I think, it works everything quite well.

You have said that you are subversive. This implies that you dont like something and want to change that. What do you not like?

Terry: Certainly we don´t like lots of things, but why we always concentrate on the negatives? There is a lot of fun to have.

Zum Beispiel?

For example?

Terry: To jump, for example, simply in a bus and to travel one month through Germany with 9 people.

Das ist immer Spass?

This is always a fun?

Terry: It is so ridiculous in his extremity that one can have fun in it. Of course there are problems. But then: What would be the life without problems? An old renter of me has said, by the way, this sometimes when in winter the heating was put down.

I think that he has been right, nevertheless.

Terry: Yes, I must admit that, but back then it hurt a lot.

Is there then a deeper meaning behind the band name?

Well, actually, I do not tell the story with pleasure because it is confidential. But in consideration of the fact that we are in Europe and it anyhow an international subject is. . . So, actually, the name comes of a Polish science fiction history, from the second book of a trilogy from which just only this second book was translated into the English.

Sehr seltsam.

Very strange.

Terry: Ja, sehr seltsam.

Terry: Yes, very strangely. And, unfortunately, I also know neither the author, nor the title of the book. . . , however, maybe I tell you it even not. . . who knows. However, I have the feeling that people can start something with „friendship society“ or the concept in Europe.

Everything what we know about the hell, we know from the opposition, from the Bible. . . and I think there must be „friendship societies“ in which one can exchange information about that.

Na klar…

Clearly…

Terry: Na siehst du…

Terry: You see…

Worüber singt ihr eigentlich?

About which themes do you sing, actually?

Terry: So we have three singles who are very theme-referring. The first was about transitoriness and tattooes, the second about the entertainment industry complex which I really hate, Movies, advertisements, magazines. . . and the third one was political and dealt with the US presidential elections the last year.

This record came out even on the election day what was very cool. And our new LP is the music to a musical which we have written. It is a music about a way of kids who are in the Highschool and steal cars. Their leader is attacked by a demon and is brought to the Astral league. . . you know what the Astral league is?

Nein, keine Ahnung.

No, no idea.

(zufällig fangen Hunde an zu bellen, weil gerade jemand zu Tür reinkommt…)

(by chance dogs catch in to bark because just somebody walks in to door…)

Terry: Animals are excited always very much when one speaks of the Astral league. And this not without reason. If your mind leaves your body and because then flies, he is in the Astral league. . . this leader is attacked by the demon and is robbed his soul. It goes thus a little bit in the direction of „Outsiders meet the Lost boys“. . .

Also eine fiktive Geschichte…

So a fictive history. . .

Terry: No, no, it is based on a true story. I think that you also experienced something strange or supernatural or not?

I believe not really. I have never seen, for example, minds in Berlin…

(Remark: shortly before Terry has told me that three of the band have seen a mind a few days ago…)

Terry: It was in Potsdam, but now on it it does not depend. I can say only very little to that cause I was totally drunk. Though I was in the same space, but I have nothing seen. . . I was got drunk, I must admit. . . , however, three different people have seen the mind.

Wie sah er aus?

How did he look?

Terry: He carried a suit, clothes which are long out of fashion.

Chrystal: Er hatte blonde Haare.

Chrystal: He had blond hair.

Terry: He just stood before Sue `s bed.

Was hat er da gemacht?

What has he made there?

Terry: He has only looked at them. Then somebody has said something animating to him and he disappeared. It was in this squat in Potsdam and one day before the stream was put down and everything was illuminated with candles because there was no stream. . . First Sue thought that it was a person and asked him, why he stared at them, then she did ask him whether he can not hear. Then Lucky simply said „Goodbye“ and the mind disappeared

Passiert euch sowas öfter?

Something like that more often it passes you?

Terry: I think that things of this kind very often happen. It is just so that they are not explicable and one edges out them so. . .

Chrystal: I think that it is due to the fact partly that in the western world many things which deal with supernatural „connection and communication“ are pushed aside. There are just only certain kinds in which we must handle with each other in these societies. There are so endlessly many levels of the communication and to close the mind to this, also stops us us from getting to know mutually really.

Terry: I think that the people forget immediately about things which seems unexplicable and this happens every day.

Was tut ihr dagegen?

What do you do against it?

Terry: I think that it also therefore goes of getting out of the „normal“ more for itself . . . more than what first there is to be taken. . . more than you is given actually. So we are probably also so indecent on tour. . .

Wie kommt ihr darauf?

How do you get on that?

Terry: I think that we have shocked many people. Some of our views are classified as „extreme“. For example, our view to the vegetables which we hold so deeply in our heart.

Welches Gemüse ist das?

Which vegetables are these?

Terry: Der Kürbis.

Terry: The pumpkin.

Is there maybe also a supernatural experience which allows to believe you in the pumpkin?

Terry: Ja, sicher. Du weisst was Halloween ist?

Terry: Yes, certainly. You know what Halloween is?

Ja, klar.

Yes, clearly.

Terry: It is a creepy holiday. It is my personal New Year, actually, it is the New Year of our secret society. Yes, actually, we are a Halloween band. And, moreover, I do start to have just my thoughts any more under control. . . all the same. So, it is, actually, about it. . . you know, most people try to come so simply and uncomplicated as possible through life.

But we do not do this just. Since it is to be simply more complicated with 14 people in the band and not to appeal to itself with your right names, to pay always with money instead of using credit cards. . . , however, this is worth it to us, thereby we take more of the life. We do not try to make everything so simply and uncomplicated as possible. . . on the contrary, we try to make everything so difficultly and elaborately as possible… and, therefore, we learn more.

Das hört sich vernünftig an.

This sounds rationally.

Terry: Thanks, I knew that you want to take part in us when I explain us to you.

Ich glaube darüber muss ich nochmal machdenken.

I believe about that I have to go over again.

Terry: Tu das bitte.

Terry: Do that, please.

I will do it. Are there then still other things which you make to be except in your secret society?

Terry: Ja, sicher.

Terry: Yes, certainly. We must do all things to pay our rent, but. . . oh, we must not talk, actually, about the dull things which we must make at home. . .

Nein, natürlich nicht, wenn ihr nicht wollt.

No, of course not if you do not want.

Terry: Well, on it it depends because: Make what you feel like. And not what you must. Many people put the things which they must make in the centre of her life and think only about it, how much they hate all that and are embittered in consequence. And this is shits.

Right, even if there are enough things about which one can be embittered.

Terry: Richtig.

Terry: Properly. But once again: If you start to celebrate the embitterness in yourself, you become a discontented old punk rocker.

Gutes Schlusswort.

Good epilogue.
